A girl stumbled upon a lake in the woods that is breathtakingly beautiful. On a sunny day, the turquoise water surrounded by mighty conifers glistened.
The water is so still that she started throwing pebbles she found at her feet. They created quiet ripples for a moment but the lake went back to its stillness and, once again, showed the girl’s pure and innocent reflection.
The girl saw a boy living in the lake and befriended him. Time flies whenever the pair play together.
The girl started bringing him gifts.
She brought him a book, the boy accepted it.
She brought him an apple, the boy accepted it.
She brought him a clock, the boy accepted it.
She brought him a candle, the boy accepted it.
She brought him a rose, the boy accepted it.
Not knowing how to swim, the girl stayed on the banks; while the boy stayed in the lake, never leaving the deep, tranquil water.
“Come with me and play in my house,” the girl said one day.
“No, I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t belong in your world and you don’t belong in mine.”
