“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.” – Nagasawa in Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
This quote stayed with me ever since and has become my motto. There are a lot of book moments in Norwegian Wood like Toru reading The Great Gatsby while waiting for Naoko’s call and Nagasawa saying that he will never touch a book by any author who had not been dead for at least 30 years.
Also, Toru bringing The Magic Mountain to the sanctuary where Naoko was confined; and Toru finding Herman Hesse’s book in Kobayashi Bookshop when he can’t sleep.
Here are the book titles mentioned in Norwegian Wood:
- The Centaur – John Updike (Amazon, Bookdepository)
- The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald (Amazon, Bookdepository)
- The Magic Mountain – Thomas Mann (Amazon, Bookdepository)
- Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger (Amazon, Bookdepository)
- Das Kapital – Karl Marx (Amazon, Bookdepository)
- Beneath the Wheel – Herman Hesse (Amazon, Bookdepository)
