The novel is inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The unnamed painter experiences Murakami’s signature surreal events amid his ordinary days befriending Menshiki and (his alleged daughter) Mariye.
